Stencil art

Stencil art

Graffiti is a form of art, when it’s done right. People are too quick to frown at graffiti, and it is true that there are some bad examples of graffiti art gone wrong. But in the same note, there are plenty of examples of bad painters and horrible paintings, and that doesn’t seem to throw people off paintings altogether. It may be a social thing, but one only needs to take a look at good street art, or even at Banksy posters – a huge success in sales – to figure out that there’s not only a lot of quality in that, but also a lot of work put into it.

Naturally, it’s hard to paint a whole wall with graffiti. So many graffiti artists, including the aforementioned Banksy, use stencils to help them out. Stencils allow them to do all the work before going out to the street and speed up the process of painting the mural. It also allows for a greater precision, especially when trying to somehow replicate other works. This is common in the works of graffiti artists that try to integrate social satire in their works and, for that purpose, need to use elements of pop culture that are easily relatable for the common person.
